About Yuki

Yuki is from Tokyo. She studied fashion and textile design at the Tokyo University of the Arts — one of the most demanding creative institutions in Japan — and came to Amsterdam for a residency that turned into something longer. Tokyo people in Amsterdam tend to become more themselves, somehow; the city gives them permission. She has the Japanese quality of attending to things properly. This is not the same as being reserved — Yuki is warm, curious, and genuinely engaged in conversation. What it means is that she notices. The details of an evening: the light in a room, the right moment to say something and the right moment not to, the quality of what is on the plate and what is in the glass. She is precise without being cold. The attention she pays is not performance; it is simply how she is. She speaks Japanese, English, Dutch, and French. She is available for events, cultural occasions, private dinners, and the kind of evening where the difference between adequate and exceptional is in the details. Men who have spent an evening with Yuki frequently describe the experience afterward and cannot quite isolate what made it so good. It was the sum of a hundred small things, each attended to correctly. She knows this. She simply does not mention it.

Japanese companion in Amsterdam — she felt like Kyoto

Yuki has the Kyoto quality — the particular attention, the precision in small things, the quality of presence that Kyoto instills and Amsterdam has not removed. We spoke Japanese for the first hour and then moved to English and both felt entirely natural. An excellent evening.

Ceramics evening — a genuine craftsperson

Yuki makes ceramics professionally and talks about her work with the craft person's precision rather than the artist's mystification. The conversation about the relationship between Japanese lacquerware tradition and Dutch contemporary ceramics was one of the more interesting I had all year.

Amsterdam for a design week — Yuki for the evening

Yuki accompanied me to a design week event in Amsterdam. She knows the design world from the craft perspective rather than the commercial perspective and her observations about the work were interesting and different from the usual. The dinner she chose was excellent.
