About Hana

Hana grew up in Brno, studied architecture at KASK in Ghent, and stayed — which is usually how the best people end up here. She works in Ghent's urban regeneration office now, which means she understands the city physically: its bones, its layers, the decisions that made it what it is. There is a Czech quality to her honesty that takes some people by surprise at first — she will tell you what she thinks about the food, the city, the exhibition — but it is never unkind, and it is always worth hearing. She knows every good restaurant in Ghent and has opinions about each, which makes her the ideal company for a proper dinner. She speaks Czech, English, Dutch, and German, and carries herself with the unpretentious elegance of someone who does not need to be impressive. Evenings with Hana feel like being with someone who has genuinely decided to enjoy herself, which is contagious. She is warm, she is funny in the dry way that requires intelligence, and she leaves you with the impression that you were the most interesting thing in the room.

Czech companion in Belgium — she felt familiar

Hana speaks Czech with the Brno warmth that is slightly different from Prague Czech — warmer in register, less cosmopolitan. We spoke Czech for the first hour and then moved to English for the dinner, and both felt entirely natural. She chose a restaurant near the Patershol that was excellent.

Literary dinner — she recommended exactly the right books

Hana is studying comparative literature and the recommendations she made during the evening were specific, considered, and exactly right. Three Czech novels I hadn't read and one German novel I had missed. The dinner was excellent and the company warm throughout.

Central European conversation in Ghent — a rare pleasure

Hana talks about Central European culture with the warmth of someone who grew up in it and the perspective of someone who now sees it from outside. The conversation about Czech and Austrian literary cultures was one of the more interesting I had in Belgium. The dinner was excellent.
